Golden Nugget

One of the things I often say about the Chadwick PIP is that every single session delivers a gold nugget. Not theory, not fluff, something practical that genuinely changes how you run your business.

A recent session was no exception. We were working with a growing business on what initially appeared to be a straightforward task: hiring a new team member. On paper, the process was solid. Define the role, identify the key qualities required, and design a trial day to assess suitability. Sensible, structured, and exactly what you would expect.

But as with many areas in business, the real value came from going a layer deeper.

This particular business is evolving quickly. Systems are changing, priorities shift regularly, and unexpected challenges arise as part of day-to-day operations. While the business itself is moving forward at pace, not everyone in the current team finds that level of change easy to navigate.

So the conversation shifted with one simple question: how are you testing a candidate’s ability to handle change?

Because the reality is this, you can hire someone with all the technical capability in the world, but if they struggle when the goalposts move, they are unlikely to succeed in a fast-paced, growing business.

That question changed everything.

Instead of running a standard trial day, we redesigned the approach entirely. A task would still be set, but with a deliberate twist. Partway through, the brief would change. The objective would shift. And the focus would move from simply assessing technical ability to observing behaviour.

How does the candidate respond? Do they adapt quickly or hesitate? Do they panic under pressure, or remain composed? Do they ask better questions, seek clarity, and take ownership of the situation?

In that moment, it became clear that adaptability, not just skill, was the real success driver for the role. And with that clarity, the hiring decision itself became far more straightforward.

This is exactly what the Chadwick PIP is designed to do. It’s not about ticking boxes or following a rigid process. It’s about asking the right questions, often the ones that haven’t yet been considered and uncovering the insights that make a tangible difference to how a business operates.

Through monthly strategic sessions, honest conversations, and a focus on what truly drives performance, business owners gain clarity, direction, and results they can see and measure.

And in every session, without fail, there’s always a gold nugget.
